Generally speaking, there is no one single cause for hypertension.  In fact, no one knows with 100% certainty the exact cause of hypertension.  What we do know is that an individual’s lifestyle can impact your risk of developing hypertension.

Dietary Lifestyle That Put You at Higher Risk for Hypertension

  • High salt consumption
  • Not eating enough fruit and vegetables
  • Being overweight
  • Lack of exercise
  • High alcohol consumption

Other Factors that Increase Your Risk of Developing Hypertension

Your Age. As we age, the long-term effects of an unhealthy lifestyle can increase our risk for hypertension.
Ethnicity. People who are of African-Caribbean and South Asian descent are at greater risk for hypertension.
Genetics: A family history of hypertension may be an indicator of greater risk for this disease.
